The show ran for 26 episodes with the winner receiving $2,000. Griffey became the first player to hit the B&O Warehouse across Eutaw Street from Camden Yards, but Gonzalez won the Derby, defeating Griffey in a sudden-death swing-off. The AL dominated for a fifth consecutive contest in 1995, slugging 21 homers to the NL's nine, and Thomas took the top prize in a tight race with Belle. Thomas is one of three players (also, Anderson and Cal Ripken Jr.) to win the Derby and homer in the All-Star Game. Making the second of five Derby appearances, Sosa came away with his only win in 2000. This year's event established a four players per league format.

Boy, somebody must be PO'd that the National League can't win this game anymore, and they've stacked the Home Run Derby to favor the NL. Should be interesting, I am going to try to endure the babbling brook of inanity that is Chris Berman and see if I can watch this thing. Shows how dumb the fans are to vote Hamilton a starter. Virtually all of is HRs this year where opposite field shots. In Spanish, the event is televised on Spanish language network ESPN Deportes. This article is about the Major League Baseball contest.

The tally reset for each round, with the top four advancing to the second round, and the top two advancing to the final. Some notable performances in the Derby include Bobby Abreu in 2005, who won the Derby with a then-record 41 homers, including a then-record 24 in the first round. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. broke the first-round record in 2019 with 29 home runs. He broke that record in the following round, hitting 40 home runs in 2 tiebreakers. The previous overall record was set in 2016 by Giancarlo Stanton, who finished with a total of 61 home runs, defeating Todd Frazier in the final round. The only exception was 2005, when Major League Baseball changed the selection criteria so that eight players represented their home countries instead of their respective leagues. The change was believed to be in promotion of the inaugural World Baseball Classic, played in March 2006. In 2006, the selection of four players from each league resumed. In 2011, the format was revised so that team captains selected the individual sides.

If he swings at a pitch and misses or hits the pitch anywhere but in home run territory, it is considered an out. Each player hits until he receives 10 outs in each round. West Springfield's Tucker Tobin was one of the hotter hitters in the state playoffs, and he'll be present on Friday night in Gameday's 1st Home Run Derby at Chantilly High School. Fielder keeps going and his next homer is the longest of the night so far at 503 feet. He finishes the second round with six homers, which gives him 17 home runs total.

State Farm continued this in 2007 as they designated $17,000 per home run (one dollar for each of State Farm's agencies), to the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. In the 2007 event, fifteen golden balls were hit for a donation of $255,000, and ten ($170,000) were hit in the 2008 event. For 2009, State Farm added $5,000 for all non-Gold Ball homers, and $517,000 was collected. For 2010, the non-Gold Ball homer was reduced to $3,000 per home run and a total of $453,000 was collected. Frazier has been a force all season for the North Division's top offensive team. The former first-round draft pick has hit eight home runs and slugged at a .495 clip this season. Cook used a huge month of June to catapult himself into the top of the league rankings. The outfielder knocked eight home runs and 29 RBI in the month while slugging a ridiculous .613. He currently ranks second in the Southern League with 17 home runs while his .523 slugging percentage places him fourth.

Previously, sponsors like MasterCard and Chevrolet had given away 500 airline tickets and automobiles had home run balls hit designated banners. The winner of the event was Prince Fielder of the Milwaukee Brewers. I still think Pujols has a good chance---not because he leads the world in homers, but he's VERY pitch selective.

Cespedes captured his first Derby crown in his second Major League season since defecting from Cuba. Before a home crowd in Cincinnati, Frazier edged past Dodgers rookie Pederson, 15-14, in the final round. This Derby marked the debut of timed rounds with bonuses for distance.

When a player reaches nine outs in each round, the "Gold Ball" was brought into play. For each Gold Ball hit for a home run, State Farm agreed to donate US $17,000 for each home run hit to the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. This marks the fifth Home Run Derby for the Gold Ball rule.

Since the inaugural derby in 1985, the event has seen several rule changes, evolving from a short outs-based competition, to multiple rounds, and eventually a bracket-style timed event. The story of the night heading into the 2022 Derby was Pete Alonso's quest for his third straight title. By the end, it was all about the two young superstars in Soto and Rodríguez. The two put on a show all night, but Soto walked it off in the final round with 19 home runs.

After two quick outs, he finally belts one to left center field but then gets five more quick outs before he finally gets his second and third homers. He has to get six to advance, five to get into a playoff for the last spot. Weather concerns in 2015 led to a reduction in time from five minutes per round to four minutes. The clock was not stopped in the final minute, and one minute of bonus time was granted only for hitting two home runs of at least 425 feet (129.5 m). In 2000, the field reverted to the current four-player-per-league format.
